Court holidays 2026

The 2026 holidays federal and state courts observe, the closures they have announced for the rest of the year, and the rule changes that take effect when 2027 begins.

  • Thanksgiving week and year-end closures
  • Seven state court systems plus federal
  • 2026 calendars to import into Outlook or Google

Most of 2026 is behind us, but a deadline set today can still end in the last weeks of the year, when courts close more often than the statute books suggest. The tables below are the 2026 lists our calculators apply, each with its source and the date we last checked it.

What is left of 2026

Three federal holidays remain: Veterans Day on Wednesday, November 11, Thanksgiving on Thursday, November 26, and Christmas on Friday, December 25. Several state systems close on more days than that:

  • The day after Thanksgiving, Friday, November 27, is a court holiday in California, Illinois and Florida and a Texas state holiday. Federal courts are open unless the district has announced a closure.
  • Thursday, December 24 is a Texas state holiday, and several Florida circuits and Texas counties close that day as well.
  • Thursday, December 31 is a closing day in some Florida circuits and federal districts; it is not a statewide holiday anywhere we cover.

Closures courts have announced for late 2026

Federal district courts often close on the day after Thanksgiving and on December 24 and 31 by local order. We have recorded the announcements of sixteen districts. Because electronic filing usually stays open, the calculator flags those days when they matter instead of moving the deadline; the District of Maryland is the exception, because it declared its three closures legal holidays for Rule 6. The Southern District of Texas closes at noon on December 31, which can matter only for a paper filing due that afternoon. Choose the district under Which court? in the federal calculator to see them.

California courts in 2026

The judicial holidays of Code of Civil Procedure § 135, with the Saturday-to-Friday rule of rule 1.11. Electronic service made in 2026 still carries the two extra court days of § 1010.6; Assembly Bill 540 removes them for service completed on or after , which is why a response period that straddles the new year can have two possible end dates. The California calculator shows both.

Georgia’s last closures of 2026

Georgia closes state offices four times between Thanksgiving and Christmas this year. After Thanksgiving on Thursday, November 26 comes a “State Holiday” on Friday, November 27, and the Governor moved Washington’s Birthday from February 16 to Thursday, December 24, the day before Christmas. A 30-day period that starts the week of Thanksgiving can therefore end on a run of four closed days. The list is the Governor’s September 2025 memo under O.C.G.A. § 1-4-1.
