Court holidays 2028

Every 2028 holiday for federal courts and seven state court systems: the official federal list, and state dates worked out from the statutes that create them until the states publish their own.

  • Federal list official; state lists projected
  • Leap year: February 29 is a Tuesday
  • Saturday holidays observed on Friday

Long deadlines reach into the next year sooner than people expect. A 180-day period that starts after ends in 2028, and a two-year limitations period that starts now ends in late 2028. This page lists the 2028 holidays our calculators already apply to those counts.

Which lists are official yet

The federal list is official: the U.S. Office of Personnel Management has published its 2028 holiday table, and we checked every date against it. California and Texas have not published 2028 lists, so their dates are computed from the statute or rule of court that creates each holiday, applying that system’s own rule for holidays that fall on a weekend. Those tables say “computed from statute” until we replace them with the published schedule; any date that changes when that happens will be recorded in the changelog, and our calculators flag results that rely on projected dates.

Projected dates are rarely wrong for holidays fixed by statute, but two things can change them: a legislature can add, move or remove a holiday (California moved Farmworkers Day by statute in 2026), and a President, governor, chief justice or county can close courts for an extra day on short notice.

The 2028 calendar at a glance

  • New Year’s Day 2028 is observed in 2027. is a Saturday, so federal and California courts close on instead. That day appears on the 2027 list, not below.
  • Two Saturday holidays move to Friday. Lincoln’s Birthday (February 12) is observed by California courts on Friday, February 11, and Veterans Day (November 11) is observed on Friday, November 10 by federal and California courts.
  • Most other holidays land on weekdays. Juneteenth and Christmas fall on Mondays, Independence Day on a Tuesday, and New Year’s Day 2029 on a Monday.
  • 2028 is a leap year. February has 29 days, so any count that crosses February 2028 is one day longer in calendar days than the same count a year earlier. A period stated in months or years is not affected: it ends on the corresponding date.
  • Texas keeps weekend holidays where they fall. Veterans Day 2028 is a Saturday in Texas and does not create a Friday holiday.

Federal court holidays in 2028

Federal courts observe the eleven legal public holidays in 5 U.S.C. § 6103. When one falls on a Saturday it is observed the Friday before, and when it falls on a Sunday, the Monday after. For deadlines counted forward, a federal court also honors the holidays of the state in which it sits.

California judicial holidays in 2028

Judicial holidays come from Code of Civil Procedure § 135, which adopts the Government Code list with exceptions, and rule 1.11 of the California Rules of Court moves a Saturday holiday to the preceding Friday. Farmworkers Day falls on Monday, April 10 under the 2026 amendment.

The longer California list for federal cases

For forward-counted federal deadlines in a California district, the judicial holidays above count in addition to federal holidays. The Government Code § 6700 list is longer: it includes days the superior courts work, it does not shift Saturday holidays except Veterans Day, and whether its extra days count in federal court is undecided, so our calculators flag them.

Texas holidays and Rule 4 in 2028

Texas national and state holidays come from Government Code § 662.003 and are kept on their actual dates. Rule 4 of the Texas Rules of Civil Procedure extends a deadline that lands on a legal holiday, and county closures announced by a commissioners court count as well, so check the county where your case is filed.

New York, Pennsylvania, Illinois and Florida in 2028

These four lists are worked out from each state’s holiday statute or its court’s usual order; none of the 2028 schedules has been published yet. The weekend rules matter more than usual in 2028, because New Year’s Day, Lincoln’s Birthday and Veterans Day all fall on a Saturday.

  • New York: a Saturday public holiday is not moved, so January 1, February 12 and November 11 add nothing to a weekend. Flag Day is a Sunday and, alone among the § 24 holidays, is not observed on the Monday. General Election Day is November 7.
  • Pennsylvania: Saturday holidays also stay put. Good Friday is April 14.
  • Illinois: if the Supreme Court follows its usual order, Lincoln’s Birthday is observed Friday, February 11 and Veterans Day Friday, November 10; the 2027 order did not move New Year’s Day 2028 to Friday, December 31. November 7 is general Election Day, a statutory holiday on which courts stay open.
  • Florida: Veterans Day is observed Friday, November 10, and New Year’s Day 2028 was already observed on .

Georgia’s 2028 list is not out yet

Georgia publishes each year’s closed days in a memo from the Governor, usually in September of the year before, so the 2028 list should appear around September 2027. The table below follows the 2026 and 2027 pattern: Good Friday on April 14 and the Friday after Thanksgiving, November 24, as “State Holiday” days, with Veterans Day, a Saturday, observed on Friday, November 10. It leaves out the December date the Governor picks for Washington’s Birthday, because that choice changes from year to year.

When the state lists arrive

The Judicial Council’s court holiday page on courts.ca.gov currently covers 2026 and 2027, and Texas posts its state holiday schedule for state agencies a year at a time. We check both before 2028 begins and switch the California and Texas tables to the official lists as they are released. To count a deadline that runs into 2028, use the deadline calculator or the court days calculator.
