Court holidays decide whether a deadline that lands on a given day stands or moves. These lists are the same data our calculators use; each table names its source and the date we last checked it.
What is unusual about 2027
- is a holiday in 2027 for New Year’s Day 2028. falls on a Saturday, so federal offices and California courts observe it on Friday, December 31. Texas does not move weekend holidays, so December 31 is an ordinary day there.
- Three more federal holidays move to a weekday. Juneteenth (June 19, a Saturday) is observed Friday, June 18; Independence Day (July 4, a Sunday) on Monday, July 5; and Christmas (December 25, a Saturday) on Friday, December 24.
- California’s Farmworkers Day moves. It is April 10 from 2027 (SB 1394), observed by the courts on Friday, April 9.
- Texas state holidays on weekdays in 2027: Confederate Heroes Day (Tue, Jan 19), Texas Independence Day (Tue, Mar 2), San Jacinto Day (Wed, Apr 21), LBJ Day (Fri, Aug 27), the day after Thanksgiving (Fri, Nov 26) and December 24 (Fri). Whether they extend court deadlines is unsettled; see the Texas section.
Federal courts
Federal courts close on the eleven legal public holidays of 5 U.S.C. § 6103, observed on the preceding Friday when they fall on a Saturday and the following Monday when they fall on a Sunday. For deadlines measured after an event, a federal court also treats the holidays of the state where it sits as legal holidays (FRCP 6(a)(6)(C)).

The President can add a day by executive order, as Executive Order 14371 did for December 24 and 26, 2025. We add such days when they are announced and record them in the changelog.
California superior courts
California courts close on the judicial holidays of Code of Civil Procedure § 135 and observe a Saturday holiday on the preceding Friday under rule 1.11 of the California Rules of Court. Courts are open on Columbus Day.

California state holidays used in federal court
A federal court sitting in California extends forward-counted deadlines over California’s judicial holidays: the Ninth Circuit has held so for the day after Thanksgiving (Dwyer and Yepremyan), and our calculators apply the other judicial holidays the same way. The Government Code § 6700 list below is longer: its extra days, on which state courts stay open, have not been held to count, so our calculators flag a deadline that lands on one instead of moving it. It moves a Sunday holiday to Monday only for the fixed dates § 6701 names, and never moves a Saturday holiday (except Veterans Day). Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha are state holidays from 2027, and Diwali has been one since 2026, but California has published no official date for them, so they are not listed here.

Texas
Texas courts look to the Government Code: the national holidays of § 662.003(a) and the state holidays of § 662.003(b), each on its actual date. The table marks how each day affects deadlines under Rule 4. Texas has no single statewide court-closure list; county commissioners courts set local closures, and those count too.

New York courts
A New York deadline that ends on a Saturday, a Sunday or a public holiday of General Construction Law § 24 runs to the next business day (§ 25-a). In 2027 two of those holidays land on a Saturday, Juneteenth (June 19) and Christmas (December 25), and New York has no rule moving a Saturday holiday back to Friday. The court system has nonetheless announced closures on Fridays June 18, December 24 and December 31; our calculator flags those days rather than moving a deadline over them. General Election Day, November 2, is a § 24 holiday even in an off year.

Pennsylvania courts
Under Pa.R.J.A. 107 a last day is skipped when it is a weekend or a legal holiday under Pennsylvania or federal law. Good , is one of them. Sunday holidays move to Monday, which puts Independence Day on Monday, July 5, but Saturday holidays stay where they are, so Friday, December 24 is not a statutory holiday even where courts close that day. Our calculator gives the earlier date and lists the later one as an alternative for those court-closure days, and for Flag Day and Election Day.

Illinois courts
The Illinois Supreme Court’s 2027 holiday order closes every court on the days below. It moves the two Saturday holidays to the Friday before (Juneteenth to June 18, Christmas to December 24), adds Lincoln’s Birthday on Friday, February 12 and the day after Thanksgiving on November 26, and does not close the courts on Friday, December 31 for New Year’s Day 2028. Pulaski Day (March 1) and Good Friday (March 26) are holidays under Illinois statutes but not court holidays; our calculator flags a deadline that lands on one.

Florida courts
Florida’s statewide court holidays are the days Fla. Stat. § 110.117 sets aside, moved to Friday from a Saturday and to Monday from a Sunday. In 2027 that produces two closed Fridays in a row at the end of the year: Christmas on December 24 and New Year’s Day 2028 on December 31. Each circuit’s chief judge may add Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur and Good Friday, and clerks’ offices close on some other days; the Florida calculator applies a circuit’s days when you choose it.

Georgia state holidays
The Governor’s memo of lists Georgia’s 13 closed days for 2027. Good Friday, March 26, is a “State Holiday”, as is the Friday after Thanksgiving. Washington’s Birthday is observed on Thursday, December 23, and Christmas on Friday, December 24, so state offices are closed for four days running, from that Thursday through the Christmas weekend. Friday, December 31 is not on the list, although New Year’s Day 2028 falls on a Saturday, and state offices are open on Monday, February 15, the federal date of Washington’s Birthday.

How this list is kept current
We compare each list with its official source before the year starts and again whenever a court or legislature announces a change; the date of the last check is shown under each table. Lists marked “computed from statute” become official once the court or agency publishes its own schedule. Corrections and newly announced closures are recorded in the changelog. To count a deadline with these dates applied, use the deadline calculator or the court days calculator.
