Illinois has no statute listing court holidays. Each year the Supreme Court enters an order under M.R. 5272 naming the days every court in the state closes, and the 2027 order is the source of the table below. The order observes a Saturday holiday on the Friday before and a Sunday holiday on the Monday after, adds the day after Thanksgiving, and leaves out three days the statutes call holidays.
The 2027 statewide order
Thirteen weekdays are closed: the federal holidays, Lincoln’s Birthday on Friday, February 12, and the day after Thanksgiving. Three dates move because of the weekend rule: Juneteenth to Friday, June 18; Independence Day to Monday, July 5; and Christmas to Friday, December 24. The order does not move New Year’s Day 2028 to Friday, December 31, so that Friday is an ordinary court day outside Cook County.

Statutory holidays the courts stay open on
Casimir Pulaski Day (Monday, March 1) and Good Friday (March 26) are legal holidays under 205 ILCS 630/17 and 5 ILCS 490, but the Supreme Court’s order keeps the courts open. General Election Day is also a statutory holiday, but only in even-numbered years, so it does not arise in 2027. The Statute on Statutes, 5 ILCS 70/1.11, extends a deadline that falls on “a holiday as defined or fixed in any statute”, and no reported decision says whether that reaches a holiday on which the courthouse is open. The Illinois calculator computes both readings and shows the earlier date first.
Cook County’s additions
The Circuit Court of Cook County closes on Pulaski Day each year and, by special order, on for New Year’s Day 2028. Its orders extend filing deadlines that land on those days to the next business day. Cook County’s Rule 2.1 counts motion notice in court days, so each extra closed day lengthens the notice period by a day when it falls inside it.
Federal courts in Illinois
For a period counted forward, a federal court in Illinois applies the days that are both statutory holidays and court holidays under the order; apart from the federal holidays, that is Lincoln’s Birthday. Pulaski Day and Good Friday are flagged rather than applied, because a state holiday on which the state’s own courts are open has no settled effect under Rule 6(a)(6)(C).
