Georgia court holidays 2027

The thirteen days Georgia closes under the Governor's 2027 memo, the two 'State Holiday' Fridays, and the February date the statute may still treat as a holiday.

  • Washington's Birthday observed December 23
  • Two Fridays listed as 'State Holiday'
  • February 15: offices open, status undecided

Georgia’s legal holidays come from O.C.G.A. § 1-4-1: the federal holidays as designated on , plus the days the Governor designates and proclaims. Each September the Governor’s office issues a memo listing the thirteen days state offices will close the next year, and the memo of is the source for 2027. Under § 1-3-1(d)(3), a deadline that falls on one of these days runs through the next business day.

The Governor’s thirteen days

Eleven are the federal holidays on their usual Mondays and dates, with Juneteenth (a Saturday) observed Friday, June 18, Independence Day (a Sunday) observed Monday, July 5, and Christmas (a Saturday) observed Friday, December 24. The other two are the Governor’s designated days, each labelled “State Holiday” in the memo: Good Friday, March 26, and the Friday after Thanksgiving, November 26. The Court of Appeals has held the latter a legal holiday under § 1-4-1 (City of Atlanta v. Hector, 2002).

Washington’s Birthday in December

The memo keeps Washington’s Birthday but observes it on Thursday, December 23, giving state employees a four-day Christmas weekend. The federal date, Monday, February 15, is therefore a working day in Georgia. Because § 1-4-1(a)(1) adopts the federal holidays by reference, the February Monday is arguably still a public and legal holiday for § 1-3-1(d)(3), and no decision settles the point. The Georgia calculator shows a deadline landing on February 15 as due that day, with Tuesday, February 16 as the alternative.

What the memo does not say

The weekend observances follow the memo’s practice rather than a statute, and the 2027 memo stops at Christmas: it does not close Friday, December 31 for New Year’s Day 2028, which falls on a Saturday. Superior, state and magistrate court clerks are county offices and generally follow the state list, but their own closing notices control the days their doors are shut.

Federal courts in Georgia

For a period counted forward, a federal court in Georgia would treat the Governor’s designated days as state-declared holidays under Rule 6(a)(6)(C). The federal calculator does not yet offer Georgia as a forum state, which can only make a federal deadline earlier; the Northern, Middle and Southern Districts’ own closures are listed on their websites.

Questions about georgia holidays in 2027

Yes. The Governor’s 2027 memo designates Friday, March 26 as a ‘State Holiday’ observed on Good Friday, and a day the Governor designates under O.C.G.A. § 1-4-1(a)(2) is a public and legal holiday, so a deadline ending that day runs to the next business day under § 1-3-1(d)(3).

Is Monday, February 15, 2027 a holiday for Georgia court deadlines?

Undecided. It is the federal Washington’s Birthday, and § 1-4-1(a)(1) adopts every federal holiday, but the Governor observes the day on Thursday, December 23 and state offices are open in February. The Georgia calculator shows the February date as the deadline and the next day as the alternative reading.

Is December 31, 2027 a Georgia state holiday?

No. New Year’s Day 2028 is a Saturday, and the Governor’s 2027 memo does not list Friday, December 31; the memos’ Friday observances are a practice, not a statute. The courts’ own closing notices may differ.
