Pennsylvania court holidays 2027

Which 2027 days extend a Pennsylvania deadline without doubt, which closures are uncertain, and why Flag Day and Election Day are flagged rather than applied.

  • Good Friday is a legal holiday
  • Flag Day and Election Day: courts open, status unsettled
  • Saturday holidays are not moved by statute

Pennsylvania counts time under Pa.R.J.A. 107 and 1 Pa.C.S. § 1908: a last day that is a Saturday, Sunday or legal holiday is omitted. Which days are legal holidays comes from the Legal Holiday Law, 44 P.S. § 11, and the federal list, and the two do not line up with the days the courts actually close. The 2027 table separates the days that move a deadline without doubt from the days whose effect is unsettled.

Twelve 2027 weekdays are legal holidays on which the courts close: the federal holidays, Good Friday on March 26, and Independence Day observed on Monday, July 5 under 44 P.S. § 12, which moves a Sunday New Year’s Day, Independence Day, Veterans’ Day or Christmas to Monday. Christmas 2027 is a Saturday, and the statute has no Saturday rule, so the legal holiday stays on December 25.

Days whose effect is uncertain

Two statutory holidays keep the courts open: Flag Day (Monday, June 14) and Election Day (Tuesday, November 2). Whether a deadline that ends on one is extended has not been decided, so the Pennsylvania calculator applies them only in its second reading and shows the earlier date first. Three court closures go the other way, closed without being statutory holidays: Friday, June 18 (Juneteenth observed), Friday, November 26 (day after Thanksgiving) and Friday, December 24 (Christmas observed). A filing due on those days should be made the business day before.

County courts close on more days

Philadelphia and Allegheny Counties publish their own court calendars, which add days such as the Monday after Easter in some years and local election days. Their 2027 lists were not yet published when this page was checked; the calculator flags a deadline landing on an announced closure once the list is loaded, and the Pennsylvania page’s notes say which counties are covered.

Pennsylvania holidays in federal court

A federal court in Pennsylvania treats the Legal Holiday Law days, including Good Friday, as state-declared holidays for periods counted forward under Rule 6(a)(6)(C). Flag Day, Election Day and the closure-only Fridays are flagged there too, because a state-declared holiday that the state’s own courts keep open has no settled effect on a federal period.

Questions about pennsylvania holidays in 2027

Is Good Friday a court holiday in Pennsylvania?

Yes. Good , is a legal holiday under the Legal Holiday Law (44 P.S. § 11) and the courts close, so a period ending on it runs to the next business day under Pa.R.J.A. 107(b) and 1 Pa.C.S. § 1908.

Does a Pennsylvania deadline move for Juneteenth observed on Friday, June 18, 2027?

It is uncertain. Juneteenth is a federal holiday that Pennsylvania courts observe, but the statute moves only a Sunday holiday to Monday, not a Saturday one to Friday; the courts’ Friday closure is by order. The calculator shows the deadline as due on June 18 and lists Monday, June 21 as the alternative.

No. is a court closure under the Supreme Court’s holiday schedule, not a Legal Holiday Law holiday, so a deadline landing on it is flagged rather than moved; the safe course is to file by the Wednesday before.
