New York court holidays 2027

The fourteen public holidays that extend a New York deadline in 2027, the Sunday rule of § 25, and the court-system closures that do not count.

  • Election Day and Flag Day are public holidays
  • No Saturday rule: June 19 and December 25 stay put
  • Closure Fridays flagged, not applied

New York’s court deadlines turn on the public holidays of General Construction Law § 24. Section 25-a extends a period that ends on a Saturday, Sunday or public holiday to the next succeeding business day, and the same rule reaches deadlines counted backward, which New York alone moves later. The 2027 list has fourteen holidays, several of which fall on days other states do not observe.

Fourteen holidays, four on weekends

The list includes Lincoln’s Birthday (February 12), Flag Day (June 13) and General Election Day (November 2), none of which is a federal holiday. Four 2027 dates fall on a weekend. Independence Day on Sunday, July 4 moves to Monday, July 5 under § 24’s Sunday rule; Flag Day on Sunday, June 13 does not, because the section excepts it; and Juneteenth and Christmas, both Saturdays, do not move because New York has no Saturday rule at all.

Closure Fridays that are not holidays

The Unified Court System announces closures on Fridays before Saturday holidays: in 2027, June 18 before Juneteenth, December 24 before Christmas and December 31 before New Year’s Day 2028. Those closures are administrative; § 24 does not list them, so a period ending on one of those Fridays is not extended by § 25-a. The New York calculator shows the date as due and flags the closure so a filer can plan for a closed clerk’s office; NYSCEF filing remains available on those days.

Mail days and the holiday rule together

Service by mail adds five days to a New York period, six when mailed from outside the state, and an overnight delivery service adds one business day (CPLR 2103(b)). The days are added to the period before § 25-a is applied, so a 30-day period that starts in late October and is served by mail ends in the week of Election Day and Veterans Day, and either holiday can carry the deadline to the next business day.

New York holidays in federal court

For a period counted forward, a federal court in New York treats the § 24 holidays as legal holidays under Rule 6(a)(6)(C), so Lincoln’s Birthday, Flag Day and Election Day can extend a federal deadline in the Southern, Eastern, Northern and Western Districts. The federal calculator applies the list when New York is chosen as the forum state.
