Texas court holidays 2027

Which Texas holidays move a deadline under Rule 4 in 2027, which state holidays have an unsettled effect, and why nothing moves off a weekend.

  • Nine national holidays are legal holidays
  • Skeleton-crew state days flagged, not assumed
  • Independence Day stays on Sunday, July 4

Texas has no judicial holiday list. Rule 4 of the Rules of Civil Procedure excludes “legal holidays” from a last day and from short periods, and the legal holidays are the days Government Code § 662.021 points to: the national holidays of § 662.003(a) and the first six state holidays of § 662.003(b). Every date is kept on its actual day; Texas moves nothing to a Friday or Monday (§ 662.005).

The nine days that move a Rule 4 deadline

New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Presidents’ Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas are the national holidays, and the courts of appeals have treated them as Rule 4 legal holidays. In 2027 Independence Day is a Sunday and Christmas a Saturday; neither produces a closed weekday, because the statute does not shift them.

State holidays with an unsettled effect

Confederate Heroes Day (January 19), Texas Independence Day (March 2), San Jacinto Day (April 21), Emancipation Day (June 19) and Lyndon Baines Johnson Day (August 27) are state holidays on which agencies keep a skeleton crew open. They are legal holidays under § 662.021, but whether a Rule 4 deadline landing on one moves has not been decided, and county courthouses differ in whether they close. The day after Thanksgiving is a full state closure in the same uncertain position. December 24 and December 26 close state offices without being legal holidays at all, though one Houston court of appeals treated December 26 as one.

County closures are a separate list

Texas courthouses follow their commissioners courts’ holiday orders, which add days the state does not close: Good Friday in some counties, Cesar Chavez Day in others, and local closures for weather. The Texas calculator carries the orders of Travis, Tarrant, Harris, Bexar, El Paso, Denton, Williamson and Hidalgo counties and applies them when you choose the county; Dallas County’s list is shown as unconfirmed.

Short periods in 2027

Under Rule 4 a period of five days or less skips Saturdays, Sundays and legal holidays. Three business days counted back from a hearing on skips Thanksgiving, the state’s closed Friday (as a flagged day) and the weekend; the same count a week earlier takes three ordinary days. The three days added for service by mail under Rule 21a(c) are always calendar days, even inside such a period.

Questions about texas holidays in 2027

Does a Texas deadline move for a holiday that falls on a weekend?

Only because the weekend itself is excluded. Texas does not observe a Saturday or Sunday holiday on a weekday (Gov’t Code § 662.005), so Independence Day on closes nothing on Monday, July 5; a deadline landing on the Sunday moves to Monday under Rule 4 because it is a Sunday, not because of the holiday.

It is a state holiday on which state offices run a skeleton crew (§ 662.003(b)), and whether a Rule 4 deadline landing on March 2 moves is unsettled. The Texas calculator shows the date without the move first and the moved date as an alternative.

Are Texas courts closed on the day after Thanksgiving 2027?

State offices are closed on , and most county courthouses follow, but the day is a state holiday rather than one of the nine legal holidays of § 662.021. The calculator flags a deadline landing on it; a county’s own holiday order may also apply.
